Keeping yourself hydrated replenishes your body with the nutrients it needs to keep fighting. Fluids also help thin the consistency of mucus in the nose so it drips down the throat easier, reducing the severity of your cough.

2. Use a Humidifier

Humidifiers are an excellent idea for bedtime and rest days. They release steam, creating a warm air that you breathe in to help reduce the levels of mucus and congestion in the body. If you don’t have a humidifier, try taking a hot shower or letting the hot water in the bathroom run. The steam will open up your nasal passageways and help to clear your throat.

3. Try Some Tea With Honey

Tea and honey is an ideal drink for targeting congestion and coughing. The hot tea breaks up congestion and helps you breathe easier. Honey has a soft, syrupy consistency that relaxes your throat and your coughing. It also is known to break down mucus in the chest. 

When to Seek Medical Care to Treat a Bad Cough

Your cough and congestion should not last more than ten days. If your cough persists after a few days of resting and drinking fluids, it’s time to see a doctor. Medical attention is especially vital if you develop new symptoms like fever, trouble breathing or intense body pains. You should also see a doctor if your mucus is thickening or changing color.
