“I love to meet people where they are and give them the support they need as they take steps toward better health.”

Growing up in a small town inspired Andrea Nutt, DNP, FNP-C to become a primary care provider in a rural setting. “Not everyone is willing or able to go to the closest city to take care of their health,” she says. “I want my rural patients to have access to the same quality health care they would get in a big city, and I’m proud to be able to offer many of the same treatments in their own communities.”

Andrea has worked in nursing since 2000. She has experience nursing in inpatient rehabilitation, hospital critical care and primary care settings. In a typical week at BestMed, she performs physical exams and diagnostic testing, prescribes medications and develops treatment plans for both acute and chronic illnesses. Her favorite part of primary care, however, is educating patients about their illnesses.

“I love to educate patients about their health and the things they can do to better manage it,” she says. “Whether eating healthy, participating in physical activity daily or taking medications as ordered, when a person understands how to take care of their health, they are much more likely to do it. I believe patients are the experts on their own felt experience of any disease — I just help them understand medical information and provide guidance.”

Andrea received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1999. She practiced nursing in a variety of hospital settings until 2007, when she returned to school at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota, to earn her Master of Arts, Nursing. She then worked in critical care and the ICU, as well as serving as an adjunct faculty member at the College of Nursing and Health Sciences in Corpus Chrisi, Texas. Later, she entered and graduated from the University of Portland, earning her Doctor of Nursing Practice – Family Nurse Practitioner in 2017.

If there were one thing Andrea could impress upon people, it’s the importance of routine care. “Prevention is so much easier than treating most diseases. Please see your primary care provider regularly to start on the path of health. Waiting until you are miserable means that you have a harder task to get back to good health and function.”

A Midwestern transplant to Oregon, Andrea lives in Roseburg and loves the mild climate of the state. Andrea lives with 3 snakes and 5 iguanas, but she’s not their biggest fan; it’s her husband Randy who loves reptiles. The couple — sans scaly creatures — like going on road trips together and have driven to and from the Midwest by car several times. Two such trips afforded them the opportunity to see baby buffalo in the springtime at Yellowstone. Andrea also likes growing tomatoes and cooking simple, delicious meals.
