Dr. R. Alden McEwen III is committed to providing his patients with the highest level of care, and to him, that means ensuring that their treatment plans are efficacious and efficient and not overmedicalized. “My extensive exposure to critical care medicine, in addition to providing me valuable expertise in comprehensive healthcare, has made me keenly aware of the harms that are done to patients by overmedicalization. This has made me personally focused on quaternary prevention via continuous, informed, shared decision making with my patients, staying within their goals of care.”
Dr. McEwen is passionate about caring for his patients at all phases of their lives, including pediatrics, and especially values the opportunity to care for the needs of the entire family. His approach to caring for his patients is one of collaboration and elevating treatment protocols by starting with the least invasive and medicated options that are the most ethically acceptable. “I don’t dictate your medical decisions—we do. I am your teammate, advocate, and ally. We come to the healthcare plan together, and each carries out our respective parts of the plan.” It is an approach that his patients find comforting and caring and has earned him their long-standing trust as the center of their care team.
Dr. McEwen also has a comprehensive women’s health focus, offering services such as all forms of birth control, including IUD placement/removal; well woman care, including pap smears with follow up colposcopy, if required; and in-office banding of internal hemorrhoids for men and women.
Originally from New Orleans, today, Dr. McEwen lives in Eugene, Oregon. “I don’t have much of an accent. I love good food and good people.” When not caring for his patients, he enjoys the beauty of Eugene with his family and dogs. He is an avid photographer, especially at sports events, and enjoys bicycling, hiking, and camping. Dr. McEwen also holds a commercial pilot’s license with multi-engine and instrument ratings.
